Karishma Kapoor Biography
The green eyed Karishma Kapoor turned rebel when she became an actress going against the legendary Kapoor family’s disapproval about their womenfolk entering the big bad world of movies. She was one of the few actresses of her time who didn’t shy away from the sexy tag, kicking up a storm when she danced to the ‘Sexy’ tune in Khuddar.

Basics on Karishma
Karishma Kapoor was born on 25th June 1974 in Mumbai, India to actors Randhir Kapoor and Babita who separated when she was quite young. She is known to her family as Lolo. Her younger sister Kareena Kapoor is also an actress.

Karishma comes from a family of actors who have in their own way put their stamp on Indian cinema. Her great grandfather was Prithviraj Kapoor of the Prithvi Theaters fame; her grandfather was “Mera Naam Joker”’s Raj Kapoor; her uncles are Shammi Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor.

She studied at the Cathedral and John Cannon School. She took up acting when she was just sixteen years old.

She was rumoured to be going out with Ajay Devgan. Her engagement to actor Abhishek Bacchan was made public during his father Amitabh Bacchan’s sixthieth birthday celebrations in 2002. But within months the engagement was broken off and in September 2003 she married Sanjay Kapur, who is the CEO of Sixt India. They had a daughter Samaira in 2005. The couple made news when they separated but they soon reconciled their differences.

Apart from movies Karishma Kapoor was also seen on television in Karishma: A Miracle of Destiny (2003). She came back to the television screens again in 2008 as a judge on Nach Baliye 4.

Karishma Kapoor’s Movies
1991 to 1995  Karishma Kapoor’s first release was in 1991 as Neelima in Prem Quaidi with Harish, as a woman who disguises herself as a man to be with her lover in prison. She acted in several movies in 1992 and 1993 that didn’t really create a big stir at the box office like Deedar, Sapne Saajan Ke, Muqabla and Shaktiman.

She had ten releases in 1995 with hits like Khuddar and Raja Babu with Govinda and Andaz Apna Apna with Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon and Aamir Khan.

1996 to 2000  It was in 1996 that Karishma Kapoor went past all expectations with her performance in Dharmesh Darshan’s Raja Hindustani with Aamir Khan as Aarti Sehgal. She won her first Filmfare Best Actress Award.

In 1997, it was the turn of Yash Chopra’s Dil To Pagal Hai to set the box office on fire. She was seen as a dancer Nisha caught in a love triangle. The movie also starred Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit. She won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award.

She came together with David Dhawan in the comedy Biwi No.1 with Salman Khan and Sushmita Sen, as a wife who gets her act together when she finds out that her husband is cheating on her. After releases like Haseena Maan Jaayegi (1999), Hum Saath Saath Hai (1999) and Shikari (2000), she surprised the audience and critics yet again in Khalid Mohammed’s Fiza (2000) winning the Filmfare Best Actress Award.

2001 to 2009  In Shyam Benegal’s Zubeida (2001) she played a romantic, impulsive and possessive woman who marries a Maharaja. She won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance. She worked in Shakti (2002), Rishtey (2002) and Baaz (2003). She moved away from movies after her marriage in 2003.

Karishma Kapoor will be seen with Amitabh Bacchan in Zamaanat in 2009 and has a cameo in a Tamil movie Kodiesvaran.
