Shamsher Raj Kapoor was born on 21st October 1931 in Mumbai, India. His father was Prithiviraj Kapoor, a theater personality. His brothers were well known actors, Raj Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor.
Shammi Kapoor was married to an actress Geeta Bali with whom he had two children. She succumbed to small pox in 1966 while he was filming Teesri Manzil. He was briefly involved with actress Mumtaz. He married Neela in 1969.
He won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995.
Shammi Kapoor’s Movies
Shammi Kapoor turned into a star with the release of Nasir Hussain’s Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957). In 1961, his movie Junglee with Saira Banu, was a hit and the song ‘yahoo’ became all the rage. Shakti Samanta’s China Town (1962) which saw him in a dual role became a moderate hit.
After Manmohan Desai’s Bluffmaster (1963), he worked with Sharmila Tagore in Kashmir Ki Kali (1964). Nasir Hussain’s Teesri Manzil (1966) saw him paired opposite Asha Parekh. Another successful movie was An Evening in Paris (1967) with Sharmila Tagore. Ramesh Sippy’s Brahmachari won many awards including the Filmfare Best Actor Award for him. Kapoor worked again with Ramesh Sippy in Andaz (1971). Hema Malini played his love interest. Rajesh Khanna had a brief appearance in the movie.
He directed and acted in the movie Manoranjan (1974) with Zeenat Aman. The movie was based on Irma La Douce. The movie was not successful. In Subhash Ghai’s Vidhaata (1982), he played Dilip Kumar’s friend and won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor. He played a supporting role in the Bobby Deol starrer Kareeb (1998). He was last seen onscreen in the movie Sandwich (2006).
